Before you book
Does Shopify have accounting software?
No. Shopify reports sales and payouts, but it is not a general ledger. Bookkeeping happens in QuickBooks Online or Xero, fed by payout-level entries from a connector like Bookkeep.
Why don't my Shopify sales match my bank deposits?
Because a payout is net of fees, refunds, chargebacks, reserves and sometimes sales tax, and it lands two to five days after the orders. Reconciling at the payout level is the only way to get both numbers to agree.
How do you book Shop Capital?
As a liability, repaid through payout remittances, never as revenue. The same goes for gift card sales, which are a liability until redeemed.
